An alternative to psychologists

Expat students in The Netherlands

Are you an expat student in The Netherlands and having some psychological problems? You are not the only one. The Netherlands is the place where over 80.000 international students go every year. Most of them are coming from European countries, but the last couple of years there is a increase in popularity from Asian students as well. The most chosen programme for international expat students in the Netherlands is Economics. Cultural studies and Engineering are also very popular. Dutch universities have, like most European universities, a big focus on social scienses. The international students in The Netherlands mostly choose subjects in culture, language, society and behavior.

Psychological problems that can come from studying abroad.

Working and studying abroad can be an adventure but also very challenging. There are different problems that can come from studying, working and living in another country.  For example you can suffer from homesickness or cultural shock. Culture shock is maybe not as shocking as you might expect. The process of learning to live in and adapt to a new culture is the most challenging part. When you arrive you may find the new situation fun and exciting, but as time passes you may start to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. Instead of interesting it sometimes can become quite irritating. It is pretty normal that you’re disorientated at first in a new culture. This does not always mean that you will need professional help, but if these problems continue and begin to affect your personal life and studies, you can always ask me for help as your counsellor.

Personal, relationship, identity or academic problems can be addressed trough counselling. These include by example; stress, fear of failure, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, lack of concentration, sexual problems, relationship difficulties or even addictions.
